Ingredients

  • 6 slices of bacon chopped
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 1 large head of cabbage cored and sliced
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon of paprika

Instructions

  • Place a large pot on the stove over medium heat.
  • Add the chopped bacon and cook until crispy, approximately 10 minutes.
  • Remove the crispy bacon from the pot and transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess grease.
  • Using the same pot with the bacon grease, add the diced onion and garlic. Sauté until they become aromatic and caramelized, which should take about 10 minutes.
  • Add the sliced cabbage to the pot and cook for an additional 10 minutes.
  • Season the mixture with onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir until everything is well combined.
  • Reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a lid. Allow everything to simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Remove the pot from the heat. Crumble the cooked bacon and sprinkle it over the cabbage.
  • Serve the dish warm and enjoy!

Notes

For a vegetarian version, skip the bacon and use olive oil to sauté the onions and garlic. You can also add other vegetables like bell peppers or carrots for extra flavor and color.
