Ex-EPL Referee: Mike Dean gives verdict on Ronaldo awarded penalty against Ghana
Mike Dean, a former referee for the Premier League, thought it was “dangerous” that VAR did not intervene in Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty against Ghana.
Portugal’s 2022 FIFA World Cup debut on Thursday night ended with a 3-2 victory over Ghana. Following a Mohammed Salisu “foul,” Ronaldo converted the penalty kick.

A lot of spectators thought Salisu got the ball and Ronaldo was easily brought down, and they disagreed with the referee’s judgment.
For beIN Sports, Dean was analyzing the event, and he concluded that Ronald’s penalty was entirely incorrect.
“The defender plays the ball,” Dean said. “Ronaldo then touches the back of the defender, goes down, instigated contact.
“It’s not the referee’s responsibility; he made the call on the playing field. In my opinion, the VAR ought to have intervened and asked the referee over to take a look.
It’s frightening, I have to say, he continued. Simply said, I’m in awe. I frequently support referees, but you can’t support something like that. The indefensible cannot be defended.
